School of Computer and Information Sciences Graduate Studies


The Master of Science in Computer and Information Sciences (MSCIS)

is a program designed for students and professionals wishing to gain advanced knowledge and expertise in one of two areas of computing: Computer Science or Information Systems.

·        Computer Science (CSC)

The Computer Science program focuses on theoretical aspects of systems development with an emphasis on the construction of system software or the development of scientific applications using software and engineering principles.

·        Information Systems (ISC)

The Information Systems program focuses on the application of systems development principles for the construction of systems software for users in an organizational environment.


Admission Requirements

Consult the current University of South Alabama Bulletin for admission requirement details.  A complete application for admission consists of

·         All academic transcripts.

·         General GRE scores are required for applicants who do not already possess the equivalent of a United States graduate degree.

·         TOEFL and TOEFL Essay scores are required of international students.

·         Three letters of recommendations regarding the applicant’s ability to complete the Master of Science in Computer and Information Sciences.

·         The applicant’s statement of purpose for pursuing the Master of Science in Computer and Information Sciences.


Degree Requirements

Consult the current University of South Alabama Bulletin for detailed degree requirements for each of the two majors: Computer Science and Information Systems.  In general, requirements will consist of

·         Completion, with a grade of at least B, of all individually prescribed Graduate Professional Component courses.

·         Completion, with a grade of at least B, of all core courses in the major.

·         Completion of all required courses.

·         Selection of a concentration: Course-Only, Thesis, or Project.

·         Completion of 36 semester hours with an overall B average.

·         Successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination.
