SH4 / Partner J Connection Details

This was put together to assist in connecting all the equipment together - and making it work the way it's supposed to.

This tutorial follows the same steps as outlined in Introductory Lab 1.

The Equipment

To have a fully operational SH4 we need the following equipment

Motherboard with SH4 daughterboard

300W ATX power supply
PartnerJ power supply

PartnerJ box

Cables
- Standard power cable for ATX supply
- JTag Cable for PartnerJ
- LPT Cable for PartnerJ

Position the equipment
First things first - place the motherboard w/ SH4 board, ATX power supply and the Partner J on a desk/table.

Connect LPT to PartnerJ and to computer (ref picture of cables)
When connecting the JTag cable to the PartnerJ be careful - the small circuit board at the end of the cable is fragile...

Connect PartnerJ JTAG Cable to SH4 Board (see below).
Connect the other end of the JTag cable to the connection marked "JTag Cable Input" below. You should hear a slight click when it's in place.
Leave the Reset Probe disconnected for now.

Connect the power supply to the PartnerJ and make sure it turns on (power LED)

Connect the output power cable from the ATX power supply to the ATX Power Connector on the motherboard.
See figure. Make sure the clip on the connector snaps in place.

DO NOT POWER UP THE ATX SUPPLY YET!

Attach the Reset Probe to the SH4 board (can be tricky)
Locate pin labeled RESET2 on the top of the SH4 board (3rd pin in a row of 3 pins next to LED)
When you attach it, make sure to press down on the top so the metal conductors come out all the way

Make sure your setup looks something like below

Finally, connect the ATX power supply to an outlet and turn it on.
A small red LED close to the ATX Power connector should come on. Once the LED is on, press the power button on the motherboard. This is a small button located at the bottom of the motherboard, to the immediate left of the battery. It is visible on the bottom of the above picture. The button is labeled SW6 PWR.

If LED's illuminate and the seven segment counters turn on - everything should be set.

NOTE --- If one of the two LED's next to the power button on the motherboard is flashing, the reset probe is not attached properly. Turn off the board, and reattach the probe.
