I earned my Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) from the University of South Alabama in May 2002. I am a Systems Developer building enterprise web applications using ASP.Net and SQL Server 2000. The CIS program helped me become familiar with all major aspects of the software development life cycle, and that breadth of knowledge has helped me work in various roles throughout my brief career.

Employers today are serious about finding team players who work well with others and have strong communication skills (verbal and written), and South does a great job of preparing students to interact with customers and peers. The instructors at South build a good foundation on the basics of problem-solving, while teaching the importance of being a lifelong learner. My experience at the University of South Alabama was by far not the average. Enrolling as a non-traditional student and a single mother, the faculty and staff of the Computer Science Department were my support system. It was their attention to my progress that made me aware that I was more than a number, I was a person. However, the expectations of each professor were never lowered due to my circumstances. South helped to change my personal expectations and prepared me for an exciting career in embedded software.

I graduated from USA with a BS in CIS and a minor in math in 1989, after graduating from Fairhope High School in Fairhope, AL in 1984. My career has included working in commercial industry, aviation and naval operations.

During my course of study, I found the professors to challenge me both as an individual and in working in a team, which helped enhance my work career. Since the majority of my classes had a small student-to-teacher ratio, I was able to develop personal interactions with the instructors. Each instructor was also very willing to assist when I had questions. I have applied many of the concepts presented during the Computer Science specialization of courses, including structured programming (and documentation), networking and operating systems. USA provided numerous resources, including access to the Alabama Supercomputer Network to complete advanced research. I also found the opportunity to grow, both as a contributor and as a leader, learning about how to run a business having served as President of the student chapter of the ACM (the USA version of a Computer Club).

As a whole, I believe USA offered me the opportunity to build a strong foundation that has served me well in this technological world in which we live. In closing, I would encourage you to do an internship or a co-op in the summertime to increase your marketability once you graduate.
